Latest Updates from Our Project:

The RPG supplement Stretch Goal is funded! And tentative add-ons.
about 4 years ago – Mon, Apr 13, 2020 at 03:01:34 PM

And enough that we're reasonably on our way to the $3,000 reward and the audiobook.  The RPG supplement will be using Pelgrane Press's GUMSHOE for its engine; I'm going to start adapting my existing campaign material to it, but obviously the July fulfillment targets come first.  I'll keep people posted on this as work continues.

Moving along: I have some tentative  add-ons.  Feel free to give feedback.

  • Extra digital copy of FROZEN DREAMS: $4
  • Extra digital copy of the Cin City map: $3
  • Extra digital copy of the RPG supplement: $10
  • Extra digital copy of the audio book (if it funds): $10

I'm still looking into whether Backerkit's going to be worth the money I'd have to spend to make it work.  If I get more backers, though, I probably won't have a choice.  Tell your friends!

All in all, this is going really, really well.  Thank all of you for making that state of affairs happen.

First two minutes of FROZEN DREAMS, in audiobook form!
about 4 years ago – Fri, Apr 10, 2020 at 04:56:19 AM

So, in anticipation for the $3K stretch goal, I've been working with Sally Stewart (you might know her from her narration of "Jocasta: The Mother-Wife of Oedipus") on the potential audiobook.  Obviously, we're still waiting to see what happens; but she's recorded a sample of the first two minutes of the first chapter, and you can hear it below.  She and I are both pretty excited about the possibility of presenting FROZEN DREAMS in audiobook form: so if you like this, tell all of your audiobook-listening friends.

In other news: we're getting to the point in number of backers that Backerkit is looking better and better, both for coordination and for making it easier for people to select add-ons.  Expect an announcement about both by the end of next week, at this point.

Finally: less than $200 to go until we hit the RPG stretch goal!  That should be fun to do.

First Look at the Cin City map!
about 4 years ago – Tue, Apr 07, 2020 at 10:06:35 AM

I don't plan to fill all of your inboxes with non-news stuff, but I do have some news: I have a map-maker!  He's Robert Altbauer of Fantasy Maps, and he came well-recommended to me.  I checked out his portfolio, liked his work, and he's working on the Cin City map even as we speak.  What I'm showing isn't the final version, and it's not full size -- but I think it's already looking good.

In other news, this is the end of our first week, and it's been a very good one.  An extremely good one *.  The RPG supplement stretch goal is coming up, and I have tentatively decided upon using the GUMSHOE System Reference Document from Pelgrane Press for the game mechanics.  Not only is it a game focused on investigation, which obviously would be appropriate for the setting to this book; it meshes well with the world of the Fermi Resolution generally.  Plus, I've both run and playtested GUMSHOE before, so I can get started more or less right away.  I think it will fit well.

Lastly: the person I've tapped to narrate and produce the audiobook ("You're going to need me to produce this, right?"  "Ahhh... why, YES. Of course I do!") is going to produce a sample first chapter, for enticement and advertising purposes.  That will probably be the subject of the next update; and after that I suspect that the flow of news will slow temporarily.   But, again: I'm not going to fill your inboxes with spam.

*This is also the start of the period where Kickstarter pledges taper off while I smile fixedly and desperately try to find new places to advertise in, so feel free to pass around the link (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/moelane/frozen-dreams-a-novel).

Another stretch goal done!
about 4 years ago – Sun, Apr 05, 2020 at 09:26:49 AM

We hit the $1500 point last night, or this morning: I am even now putting out the call for a mapmaker.  If you happen to know somebody who is interested in this gig -- which might lead to more map-making work -- let me know.  I want to get things in motion on it as quickly as possible; the sooner it's started, the sooner it's finished.

The next stretch goals, of course, are the full RPG setting at $2,000 and the audiobook at $3,000.  Past that, we're going to take a big jump in funding to the next step on the publishing schedule:

  • $6,000: TALES OF THE FERMI RESOLUTION (working title)!  This collection of short stories is set in the same universe as FROZEN DREAMS, but will span the North American continent from the grim days just after the rise of magic and the fall of the Old Americans, to the grim days where the Universal Dominion... well, that would be telling. Nine hundred years worth of stories!  Many of the stories have appeared in my Patreon already, but several will not be -- and they'll all be revised and improved by the time the book is ready.  A copy equivalent to the one eventually published on Amazon (or other e-book site) will be provided to anybody who backs this project at ADVENTURER or above; the original sampler of six stories will still be given to everyone who backed the project at READER and above, but TALES OF THE FERMI RESOLUTION (working title) will have cover art --and, of course, more stories.

After many, many requests: there is another physical copy tier. Also: add-on questions.

Thirty signed and lettered books in this series, same price as before. I still say that it's cheaper to buy the book yourself and get me to sign it later, but I'm gonna listen to my wife and let you give me money.  And not sound like Grumpy Cat in the process.

Also: I've had requests for add-ons.  I'm thinking of making extra copies of the short story sampler and book itself available as add-ons, as well as the RPG supplement and audiobook* if those stretch goals are met.  The major wrinkle is that eventually I'm going to be ending up on Backerkit, but that's a problem of success, not failure, so see previous comment about Grumpy Cat.

Thoughts on any or all of this are welcome.  This is the first time that I'm doing this, too.  Also, and lastly: thanks for being supportive.

*Fair warning: the supplement and audiobook add-ons would be at least $10 each.  I possibly should have linked them to the ADVENTURER level, but what the heck.
